Tesla Cybertruck Powershare finally backs up homes with a Powerwall 3
Tesla says its Cybertruck can now work alongside a home Powerwall 3 battery to back up a house during an outage, closing a gap that has frustrated owners for nearly two years. Until this update, homeowners with a Powerwall couldn't also use the truck for backup power — it was one or the other. Now the two can run together: the Powerwall 3 handles the home as usual, while the Cybertruck's much larger battery extends how long the power stays on. Tesla says the combination adds more than three days of extra backup, equal to adding nine more Powerwalls, since the truck's battery is roughly nine times the size of a single Powerwall's storage capacity.
This feature, called Powershare, works by sending power from the truck into the house through equipment called a Universal Wall Connector and a Powershare Gateway, which together typically cost around $4,000 installed, though some owners have reported quotes far higher. Powershare launched with the Cybertruck in late 2023, but combined use with a Powerwall was promised for 2025, then pushed back again to mid-2026, and only now has arrived. Tesla has said the delay came from the technical challenge of getting the truck and the Powerwall to safely coordinate power together.
For homeowners who already have a Cybertruck and a Powerwall, or are considering both, this update means the two can finally be used together for outage protection rather than as competing options.
