Suzuki Unveils it BEV Kei Car for Release This Autumn

August 25, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

Suzuki has unveiled the e SKY, its first fully electric "kei car" — Japan's category of small, low-power vehicles built for city and neighborhood driving. The car is set to launch in Japan this autumn, though Suzuki hasn't released pricing yet. It's built for short daily trips like commuting, school runs, and errands rather than long highway drives.

The e SKY weighs about 1,030 kilograms and uses a 26-kilowatt-hour battery, giving it a reference range of 310 kilometers (not yet officially certified). It can fast-charge to 80% in about 25 minutes, or take roughly 4.5 to 8 hours on a home-style charger depending on the outlet used. It also has a heat-pump system, a more efficient way of heating and cooling the cabin that saves battery power, and can even run small appliances through a built-in outlet. Suzuki's approach here is notable: instead of building a bigger battery, engineers made the car lighter and more efficient to stretch range from a smaller pack.

This isn't a vehicle expected to arrive in the U.S. market, since kei cars are a Japan-specific category with strict size and power limits. But it's a sign of where small, efficient EVs are headed — smaller batteries, lower cost, and less reliance on scarce battery materials, aimed at people whose daily driving is mostly local rather than long-distance. If you're weighing home EV charging as part of your own household's energy upgrades, it's worth watching whether similar efficiency-first EV designs eventually make their way to your own market.
