Successful Market Launch of the Electric Urban Car Family: CUPRA Raval, Volkswagen ID. Polo, Škoda Epiq, and Volkswagen ID. Cross Together for the First Time at the Paris Motor Show
Volkswagen Group has four new electric small cars on the market together for the first time: the CUPRA Raval, Volkswagen ID. Polo, Škoda Epiq, and Volkswagen ID. Cross. All four showed up at the Paris Motor Show as a group, after debuting separately earlier. Combined, the four models have already drawn almost 150,000 orders.
The cars share a common base called MEB+, an electric vehicle platform, with more than 80 percent of their parts and technology identical, including the battery and drivetrain. That shared engineering is meant to keep costs down and make electric cars more affordable at the entry level, a segment that has not had many electric options until now. Even though they share so much under the skin, each model keeps its own styling and brand identity: the Raval and ID. Polo are compact hatchbacks built in Martorell, Spain, while the Epiq and ID. Cross are small SUVs built in Pamplona, Spain.
This is mainly news about the European car market rather than something that changes plans for a home energy upgrade. None of these models have been confirmed for sale in the United States, and no prices or delivery dates were given. For a homeowner thinking about an electric vehicle alongside other upgrades, like a heat pump or rooftop solar, the takeaway is simply that more affordable small EVs are entering production in Europe, which could eventually expand the pool of lower-cost electric models available elsewhere.
