Study Measures HVACR Distribution’s $33 Billion Economic Impact

August 31, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 37

A new study looks at the companies that supply heating, cooling, and refrigeration equipment to contractors, and finds the business is bigger than most homeowners probably realize. The trade group HARDI reports that wholesale HVACR distribution supports more than 100,000 jobs nationwide and generates almost $33 billion a year in economic output, along with $17.8 billion in value added and $8.7 billion in employee pay.

For a homeowner, this isn't news that changes anything about your own house or an upgrade you're planning. It's a look behind the scenes at the supply chain that gets furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and refrigeration parts from manufacturers to the technicians who install them. The study breaks results down by state, so the size of this part of the industry varies depending on where you live.

The bigger point is about the health and scale of an industry segment that rarely gets attention on its own. HARDI built the numbers using U.S. Census data and economic modeling software, since HVACR distribution isn't tracked as its own category in standard government statistics. The group says this gives policymakers and industry leaders a clearer picture of the workers and businesses that keep home heating and cooling equipment moving, and plans to update the analysis over time to track how the industry grows. None of this affects rebates, incentives, or what equipment costs right now, but it does underscore that behind every furnace or heat pump installed in a home, there's a substantial distribution network keeping parts and products in supply.
