SolarEdge makes ConnectDER meter collar a standard component of new Nexis system

August 4, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 42

SolarEdge has made a device called IslandDER a standard part of its new home solar-and-battery system, Nexis, whenever that system includes home backup power. IslandDER is a "meter collar" — a component that fits behind or near your electric meter and handles the job of sensing a power outage, disconnecting your house from the grid, and switching over to battery power. Built by a company called ConnectDER, this version connects to the Nexis inverter over a digital ethernet cable rather than older analog wiring.

For homeowners, the practical upshot is about installation, not performance. Because IslandDER packs several components into one unit, installers can often skip main electrical panel upgrades, extra backup circuit panels, and rewiring that battery backup systems have typically required. One installer quoted in the announcement said this cuts labor, materials, and wall clutter, and speeds up the job. That could mean a simpler, less invasive, and potentially less expensive installation if you're considering a SolarEdge Nexis system with battery backup.

Nexis itself is SolarEdge's newer solar-and-storage platform, with battery capacity that can range from 5 kWh up to 80 kWh and support for large appliances like HVAC systems during an outage. IslandDER is now available nationwide through distributors. In some areas it can be installed directly at your existing meter socket; where local utilities haven't approved that yet, it can go into a separate customer-owned socket, often without needing utility sign-off.
