Solar + storage construction starts on Project Sterling in Arizona
Construction has begun on a large solar and battery project in Mohave County, Arizona, built by ContourGlobal. Project Sterling will generate 509 megawatts of solar power and pair it with 1.4 gigawatt-hours of battery storage, letting it supply power for up to 16 hours a day, including after dark. Tesla has already signed a deal to buy the power output.
The build involves installing more than 760,000 solar panels and over 300 battery storage containers, along with a new 5.2-mile access road connecting the site to historic Route 66, between Topock and Kingman.
This is a utility-scale project, not something tied to any residential rebate or incentive program, so it will not directly affect what you pay for equipment or installation at home. But it is a sign of where battery storage technology is headed: longer discharge times and bigger projects pairing solar with storage to deliver power around the clock. As costs for this kind of large-scale storage keep coming down, it can eventually filter into the broader market, including the home battery systems sold alongside rooftop solar. For now, this is simply a regional power-supply project to watch, not something that changes available rebates or your own upgrade options.
