Solar-plus-storage is having a global growth spurt

September 4, 2026 · Canary Media · Score: 37

Investors put a record $25 billion into solar-plus-storage projects worldwide in the first half of 2026, according to new data from BloombergNEF. These are projects that pair solar panels with grid batteries on the same site, letting them store extra power generated on sunny afternoons and release it later, when the sun goes down or demand rises. That total is nearly double the previous record, set in the second half of 2025.

The pairing works because solar's biggest drawback is its uneven output: no power at night, a surge at midday, often out of sync with when people actually need electricity. Batteries smooth that out, letting a solar farm act more like a traditional power plant that can supply energy on demand. The U.S. is one of the leading countries for this kind of investment, and grid batteries here just had their best quarter ever for installations, with nearly half of that new battery capacity built alongside solar farms.

For homeowners, this is mostly a sign of where the broader energy system is headed rather than something that changes your options directly. Overall renewable energy investment held flat compared to the previous six months, and offshore wind spending actually dropped due to weak auction results in Denmark and Germany. But the growth in combined solar-and-battery projects suggests utilities and grid operators are leaning harder on this pairing to keep power reliable, which could shape how electricity is generated and priced in the years ahead.
