Solar for Ukraine campaign continues to save lives

This is a story about solar power helping Ukrainian hospitals, not a program homeowners in other countries can join, but it shows how solar plus battery storage works as backup power during grid failures.

The Solar for Ukraine campaign, run by the Biohaus Foundation with Greenpeace Germany and Greenpeace Ukraine since mid-2024, aims to equip at least a dozen Ukrainian hospitals with solar systems that can provide emergency power when the grid goes down or fuel-dependent generators fail. A typical setup includes 60 kW of solar panels, a 40 kW hybrid inverter, and a 72 kWh battery — enough to keep a hospital running during outages that, in Ukraine, can last hours and happen almost daily.

The campaign has become more selective over time. It no longer accepts used solar panels, since low efficiency and high shipping costs make them less cost-effective than buying new panels — many suppliers had surplus 400-watt panels that were hard to sell elsewhere. Organizers also turn down grid-connected inverters, since Russian attacks on infrastructure make standalone, battery-backed systems more reliable.

A related effort, SolarWomen4Ukraine, has trained about 30 women as installers, largely because so many men are serving in the military. The goal is to build a lasting solar company that serves regular customers too, not just hospitals. Organizers say roughly 100 more hospitals are waiting for support, and the campaign continues to seek donations of money, tools, and technical training.
