The main point: hot tub wiring is governed by a specific section of the National Electrical Code covering pools, spas, and hot tubs. The circuit needs ground-fault protection (a safety device that cuts power if current leaks somewhere it shouldn't), a shutoff switch installed near but not right next to the tub, and wiring sized correctly for the load. Because a hot tub can run for hours at a stretch, code treats it as a "continuous load" and requires a 25% safety cushion when sizing the breaker. So a tub rated at 30 amps actually needs a 40-amp breaker, and the wires and conduit (the protective pipe wires run through) have to be sized to match. Most hot tubs run on 240-volt power and need four wires: two hot, a neutral, and a ground.

For anyone actually planning this kind of install, the advice is to view this as a job for a licensed electrician unless you're genuinely confident in your own wiring skills, and to pull a permit and get it inspected either way, since local rules apply on top of the national code. If you're adding a hot tub to your own patio or deck plans, this is one of those add-ons worth budgeting for professional electrical work rather than treating as a simple DIY hookup.
