Simple Ventilation for Small Spaces

July 21, 2026 · Fine Homebuilding · Score: 54

A new window-mounted ventilator called the SWERV offers fresh, filtered air for renters and owners of small homes who don't have central heating and cooling ductwork. Regular energy-recovery ventilators (ERVs), which bring in fresh air while recovering heat and moisture from the air being pushed out, usually need ducts and wall penetrations, making them costly and impractical for small spaces or rental units. The SWERV skips that entirely: it fits into a single-hung, double-hung, or slider window much like a portable air conditioner, using foam blocks to seal the gaps, and can be installed in minutes without hiring anyone.

The unit works by switching the direction of its fan, alternating between pulling stale air out and pushing fresh air in through a single core that recovers up to 80% of the heat and moisture that would otherwise be lost. You can also run it in exhaust-only or supply-only mode if that suits your needs better. Incoming air passes through a washable prefilter plus a second filter (either MERV 8 or the finer MERV 13) to catch dust and particles.

The company, SWERVAIR, started a beta program in January 2026. Units are priced at $800 and are designed to cover about 1,000 square feet, roughly the size of a small apartment or house. This could be worth a look if you rent, own a small home, or simply want better air quality without opening up walls for ductwork.
