Sierra Club Urges Strong Public Protections, Good Jobs and Clean Energy in Mesabi Metallics Incentive Deal

October 14, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 14

The Sierra Club's Iowa chapter is pushing back on a planned taxpayer-funded incentive package for Mesabi Metallics' steel mill in the state. In a letter to the Iowa Economic Development Authority, the group argues that any public money for the project should come with enforceable conditions, not be handed over with no strings attached.

The group's recommendations focus on energy and pollution. It wants Mesabi Metallics to buy new renewable power for the plant, use energy efficiency measures, and electrify equipment where possible, while making sure the cost of new power plants and electric lines needed for the facility doesn't get passed on to regular households through higher electric bills. On pollution, the letter calls for controls on dust, covered or zero-emissions trucks, and enclosed storage for ore, scrap, and waste materials, plus a plan to eventually use clean-produced hydrogen in the mill's production process.

The letter also raises labor and community concerns, asking for commitments to hire locally, respect workers' right to unionize, negotiate fairly, and fund job training with area schools and colleges. A chapter director said any public incentives should come with written, enforceable commitments and real consequences if the company doesn't follow through.

This is a policy dispute over one company's incentive deal in Iowa, not a program homeowners can apply to. It doesn't change any rebate or upgrade option available to you now, but it's a sign of how state incentive deals for industry are increasingly being scrutinized for effects on electricity rates and local pollution.
