Scoop: BlocPower faces restructuring — and investors stand to lose

August 6, 2026 · Latitude Media · Score: 62

BlocPower, a startup that financed heat pumps and other electrification upgrades for homes and apartment buildings, is in financial trouble. The company is negotiating a sale of some software assets and considering a broader restructuring after burning through cash. A subsidiary that holds money raised from everyday crowdfunding investors reported an annual loss of nearly $737,000, with only $80,000 in reserves and more debt than assets. Investors who put in a combined $3.6 million since 2021 through platforms like Honeycomb Credit, WeFunder, and Climatize were told in a July letter that any asset sale likely won't cover all the company owes, and some may not get repaid in full.

BlocPower's model relied on signing building owners to long-term leases for heat pumps and other upgrades, with monthly savings on utility bills meant to offset the lease cost. Those leases were supposed to eventually be pooled and sold to Wall Street investors, similar to mortgage bonds. But rising interest rates, costly city partnerships that fell apart (including in Ithaca, New York, and Menlo Park, California), and federal policy shifts have squeezed the business. The Trump administration froze a nearly $9 billion federal program for home electrification in 2025, later barred states from using related funds to promote heat pump swaps, and Congress ended home electrification tax credits.

For homeowners, this doesn't cancel existing heat pump rebates or incentives outright, but it's a reminder that federal support for electrification has been shrinking and some financing companies backing these projects are under real financial strain. It's worth checking directly with your state or utility for what electrification incentives are still active before relying on a private financing partner's promises.
