Rush To Promote Unsupervised Tesla FSD Videos Raises More Questions
This is car news rather than home energy news, but here's what's happening: Tesla's "Full Self Driving" (FSD) system is under fresh scrutiny after NBC News found dozens of videos of drivers not supervising the system as required, including some who appear to fall asleep at the wheel. Tesla's own rules say FSD needs a fully attentive driver at all times and isn't a self-driving system, but CEO Elon Musk has kept promoting it as if it works unsupervised, including sharing a video of a 98-year-old driver who says he no longer watches the road at intersections.
Illinois Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has asked the Department of Transportation and highway safety regulators to investigate. He also flagged a Tesla software update that told drowsy drivers to "stay focused with FSD" — which he called contradictory, since a system that needs supervision shouldn't be encouraging tired drivers to lean on it more. Federal safety regulators already have an ongoing, more serious investigation into FSD's safety record.
Separately, Tesla's robotaxi service has started suspending riders who deliberately step in front of its self-driving Cybercabs to test how they react, suggesting Tesla can track this behavior through cameras or vehicle data tied to user accounts.
None of this involves home energy upgrades or rebates. It's included here only as general news about Tesla's self-driving technology and the questions regulators are raising about how it's marketed and used.
