rPlus advances two utility-scale solar projects in Idaho
Idaho's power grid is getting a big boost from two new large-scale solar projects. Developer rPlus Energies has finished the 125-megawatt Pleasant Valley Solar 2 project and started building the 400-megawatt Blacks Creek Energy Center, both in Idaho. Combined with earlier projects, the company has now developed more than 1 gigawatt of solar and battery storage capacity across the state.
For homeowners, this is grid-level news rather than something that changes what's available for your own house. It doesn't come with a rebate or program you can sign up for. Idaho Power, the utility partnering on these projects, says the added generation is meant to help keep electricity reliable and affordable as demand grows in the state. The two projects together represent an investment of more than $750 million and are expected to create hundreds of construction jobs plus some permanent positions once they're running. The projects will also generate long-term tax revenue for Idaho and local communities through the state's solar energy tax.
There's a small local angle too: project partners gave $375,000 in scholarships to students at Boise State University and the College of Western Idaho to help train future energy workers. Overall, this is part of a broader build-out of solar and storage in Idaho, which over time could mean more clean power on the grid your home draws from, even though it doesn't translate into a direct action or incentive for individual homeowners right now.
