United Air Temp, an HVAC contractor serving the Washington, D.C. area, is closing its Lorton, Virginia headquarters on November 10 and cutting 96 jobs there, according to a notice filed with the state's workforce agency. The company also filed a notice with Maryland regulators for 39 layoffs affecting remote service workers, also effective November 10. Together the cuts touch technicians, plumbers, and supervisors, and the Virginia layoffs alone amount to roughly a third of the company's workforce there.
The company has been owned by private equity since 2021, first under Summit Park and then, after a 2024 sale, under Littlejohn & Co., which lists United Air Temp as part of its United Comfort Group portfolio. No reason for the closure or layoffs was given in the filings. United Air Temp, founded in 1931, says it serves homeowners in the Baltimore, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Florida markets.
For homeowners in these areas who use United Air Temp for heating and cooling service or installation, this is worth watching. A company closing its headquarters and cutting a large share of its technician staff may see slower response times, scheduling changes, or disruptions to ongoing service contracts and warranties in the coming months. If you have upcoming work scheduled with this company, it may be worth confirming that appointments and any warranty or service agreements are still being honored as the layoffs take effect.
