Polestar EVs are a smoking deal at $25k off now that they’re banned in the US
The federal government recently moved to ban Polestar, a Swedish electric car brand owned by China's Geely, from selling connected vehicles in the US starting with the 2027 model year, citing cybersecurity concerns. Polestar builds its Polestar 3 SUV in South Carolina and its Polestar 4 in South Korea, both running American-made Google software. In response, Polestar is now offering steep discounts to move remaining inventory.
The Polestar 4, an electric coupe, is discounted by $25,000, dropping the starting price to about $31,400 directly through Polestar's website. That makes it one of the cheapest EVs in the country, behind only the Chevy Bolt EV at $27,000 and the Nissan Leaf at $30,000. The Polestar 3 SUV carries a $23,000 discount, bringing its starting price to $44,500, which is in line with other entry-level electric SUVs but for a more upscale vehicle.
For anyone thinking about buying an EV, these deals could be worth a look, but there's uncertainty involved. The ban only affects sales of 2027 and later model years, so existing cars should remain drivable and able to receive software updates for now, since Polestar still sells globally. Still, buyers should weigh the long-term outlook for parts, service, and support given the regulatory situation. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside other home energy upgrades, like solar panels or a home charger, this is a case where the deal is real but the company's US future is less certain than usual.
