This is an industry opinion piece about a workforce shortage at electric utilities, driven mostly by the surge in data centers built to run artificial intelligence. AI computing needs huge amounts of electricity, and one estimate cited puts U.S. data center demand at 426 terawatt-hours by 2030. Building the power lines, substations and grid upgrades to supply that demand takes specialized engineers, technicians and project managers, and the piece argues utilities don't have enough of them. Nearly half of U.S. engineers are now 50 or older, and utilities are competing with tech companies for the same skilled workers, especially at smaller and rural utilities with fewer resources.

There is no direct action for homeowners here. But it points to a real possibility worth watching: if utilities can't staff up fast enough, grid upgrades needed to support new demand, including rooftop solar hookups, EV charging capacity, and reliability improvements, could take longer to arrive in some areas, particularly smaller or rural utility territories. It is not a program or rebate, just a structural pressure on how quickly the grid serving your home gets modernized.
