Organic Flow Batteries Get Another Shot At Long Duration Energy Storage
Battery researchers are pushing a decades-old idea back into the spotlight: flow batteries, which store energy in liquid tanks rather than solid cells like the lithium-ion batteries in most home solar setups. The appeal is duration. Lithium-ion batteries typically run for only a few hours, but the U.S. Department of Energy says the grid needs storage that lasts 10 hours or more to handle a future with more wind and solar power. Flow batteries can be built with tanks and pumps rather than scarce battery materials, and some versions skip toxic or flammable ingredients altogether.
The latest push involves "organic" flow batteries, which use carbon-based molecules instead of metals. A California company called Quino Energy is building a water-based version using natural molecules called quinones, recently landing a grant to help power a microgrid in the Maldives. A Massachusetts company, XL Batteries, has patented its own chemistry and claims a lifespan of more than 20 years at low cost. It has run a pilot project in Houston and signed a deal to supply storage for data centers, with systems planned for 2027, 2028, and 2029.
None of this is a product homeowners can buy yet. These are utility- and data-center-scale projects, not systems sized for a house. But the technology matters for the broader grid: more long-duration storage means more room for solar and wind power to reliably replace fossil fuel generation, which shapes electricity rates and availability over time.
