Order up: Janus Electric set to convert 67 diesel trucks to battery-swap EVs

July 20, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 28

This news is about heavy-duty freight trucks, not home energy systems, but it touches on the same rebate world homeowners are getting used to. An Australian company, Janus Electric, is converting 67 diesel semi trucks in the US to electric power, using a battery-swap system rather than plug-in charging. The trucks belong to fleet operators like Golden State Express and Tradelink Transport, and the deal also includes new swappable battery packs and battery-swap stations.

The conversions are backed by a voucher incentive program, and when combined with extra support from the Port of Los Angeles, buyers can get up to $166,000 off per truck. It is a reminder that rebate and voucher programs exist well beyond home upgrades like heat pumps or insulation, covering commercial vehicles too, though this specific program is not one homeowners can tap into.

The trucks themselves run on a 480 horsepower electric motor and a 310 kWh battery pack, with room for a second pack, giving up to 370 miles of range. Batteries can reportedly be swapped in about four minutes, much faster than refueling with diesel. Janus says its Australian fleet of 25 converted trucks has already logged more than 600,000 kilometers using this system. For homeowners, there is no direct action here, but it shows battery-swap technology and conversion incentives are expanding into new corners of transportation, which may eventually shape how energy and rebate programs are structured more broadly.
