Open Letter to Elon Musk: You Have a Moral Imperative to Get All Your Tesla EV Customers Using Full Self Driving

October 4, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

This piece is an opinion letter, not energy-efficiency news, but here's the gist for anyone tracking EV technology. A Tesla owner argues that Musk should stop charging $99 a month for Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) feature, an advanced driver-assist system, and instead make it standard and turned on by default in all capable cars. The writer, who has used FSD for four months in a Model Y, says the technology works well enough that Tesla has a moral duty to get more drivers using it, citing Musk's own claim that it could prevent a large share of crash deaths. Right now only about 15 percent of Tesla owners use FSD.

The letter also notes that one insurer, Lemonade, offers a discount of half the mileage fee for miles driven using FSD, but only in six states — Arizona, Oregon, Indiana, Colorado, Tennessee, and Missouri. Wisconsin and Utah are not among them.

None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades, rebates, or weatherization. It is relevant only if you already own a Tesla or are weighing one against other EVs and want to know how the car's self-driving features and insurance discounts currently work, and where they are available.
