NYC declares war on fast e-bikes, sends cease-and-desist letters to Amazon and Walmart

August 8, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 12

This is off-topic for Retrofit Relay, which covers home energy efficiency upgrades and rebates. The news is about New York City cracking down on fast electric bikes and scooters sold online, not about weatherization, heat pumps, or home energy programs, so it doesn't fit what this site's readers come here for.

For context, though: New York City's mayor has sent cease-and-desist letters to 40 online retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Temu, and Wayfair, demanding they stop selling electric bikes and scooters that don't meet the city's rules. Retailers have until later this month to comply or face fines up to $2,000. New York City caps electric bicycle speeds at 25 mph, lower than the 28 mph allowed for similar bikes in most other parts of the country, so some bikes sold as legal elsewhere are not legal there. The city is also targeting more powerful electric motorbikes that use much stronger motors than standard e-bikes but get marketed using the same term. Amazon says it is reviewing the products the city flagged and is willing to work with officials.

None of this involves home energy upgrades, insulation, heating systems, or rebate programs, so there is nothing here that affects decisions about your house.
