Not sold on Tesla Powerwall? There are great battery alternatives out there [update]

October 5, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 59

If you're thinking about backup power for your house, the Tesla Powerwall isn't the only option anymore. Several alternatives now offer comparable or expanded features, and some sidestep concerns people have about Tesla, whether that's cost, past recalls, or just wanting other choices.

A few stand out for different reasons. The Anker SOLIX X1 starts small (5 kWh) and can scale up to 180 kWh, so you can start modest and add storage later. BLUETTI's EP800 can charge from the grid during cheap off-peak hours and store that power for when rates rise, which works even without rooftop solar, useful for renters or homeowners not ready for a full solar setup. The EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra is modular and portable, pairing with solar systems you may already have. Enphase and FranklinWH both offer whole-home battery systems that integrate with existing solar, while GM's Energy Home System can work with GM electric vehicles for extra backup power, starting around $11,897 for a 10.6 kWh unit. Sigenergy's V2X stands out because it lets many EVs, including Tesla Model 3 and Y, send power back into the house, something Tesla's own Powerwall system doesn't yet support for those models.

For homeowners who want top performance and don't mind paying more, the Villara VillaGrid+ uses a different battery chemistry (lithium-titanium-oxide) that holds up longer over time and comes with a 20-year warranty, double the typical 10-year term, though it costs roughly double a Powerwall per kWh. Given how differently these systems handle storage, solar, and EV integration, checking which features matter most for your own home is worth doing before committing to any one brand.
