No single person has spent more money to harm EVs than Tesla CEO Elon Musk

October 12, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 24

A new campaign finance report shows Tesla CEO Elon Musk has spent $366 million on political donations during the 2026 midterm elections, with $276 million of that in just the past three months. That tops the $288 million he spent in 2024, making him the single largest political donor this election cycle. Nearly all of this money has gone to Republican candidates, even though Tesla itself sells electric vehicles and the Republican party has broadly opposed EV incentives, pulled back funding for public charging stations, and taken actions that have cost EV-related manufacturing jobs.

Tesla's own financial filings and quarterly reports acknowledge that Musk's political activity has hurt the company, citing billions in lost revenue and pointing to falling sales and damaged brand reputation in the U.S. and abroad, including lost business in countries like Canada, Australia, Germany, and Denmark. Despite this, Musk has continued and even increased his political spending rather than pulling back.

None of this changes rebate programs, tax credits, or EV incentives available to homeowners right now. But it is useful context if you are watching the EV market or considering an electric vehicle purchase: the political fights playing out around EV incentives and charging infrastructure funding are tied partly to this kind of large-scale lobbying, which could continue to influence how stable or available those incentives remain in your state.
