Nissan’s new entry-level ‘Wave’ EV spotted for the first time

September 1, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 13

This one's outside the home energy space, but here's the gist: Nissan is testing a new small electric car, expected to be called the "Wave," on public roads for the first time. It's aimed at buyers who want something cheaper than most EVs on the market today.

The Wave is expected to launch in Europe in the first half of 2027, priced under €20,000 (about $23,200) before any subsidies or incentives. It would sit below Nissan's existing Micra EV in size and price, competing with other budget electric cars like the Leapmotor T03 and BYD Dolphin Surf. Nissan hasn't released official specs, but reports point to a 27.5 kWh battery (using LFP chemistry, a battery type known for being cheaper and more durable than some alternatives) and a single electric motor producing 82 horsepower. Estimated range is up to 163 miles on the European testing standard, which tends to run higher than U.S. range estimates for the same car.

The car is expected to share its underlying platform with the Renault Twingo and be built at a Renault plant in Slovakia. There's no word yet on whether the Wave will come to the United States, and no mention of U.S. pricing or availability. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home upgrades like a heat pump or a home charger, this is one more sign that automakers are pushing toward smaller, less expensive electric models, though this particular car looks aimed at European buyers for now.
