NIO Performs 1.2 Million Battery Swaps in Just 7 Days

October 10, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 2

Chinese automaker NIO set a new record for electric vehicle battery swapping during China's 7-day National Day holiday in October. Instead of plugging in to recharge, drivers pulled into one of NIO's 4,168 swap stations and had a depleted battery pack exchanged for a charged one. Over the week, these stations completed 1,192,221 swaps, with the daily average up 22 percent from the year before. On October 1 and again on October 5, the company broke its own single-day swap record, topping out at 183,664 swaps in one day — roughly one swap every 47 seconds across the network.

Including both swapping and plug-in charging, NIO's full network of 9,567 stations (covering its NIO, Onvo, and Firefly brands) handled just over 2 million charging and swapping sessions during the holiday. NIO says the swap stations saved drivers 309,124 hours they would otherwise have spent waiting to charge, and 203,581 different drivers used the swap network over the week.

This is a China-specific development: battery swapping lets a driver trade a near-empty pack for a full one in minutes rather than waiting at a charger. It is not a feature available on EVs sold in the United States, and no U.S. automaker currently offers it. For homeowners thinking about home EV charging setups, the relevant takeaway is simply that this fast-swap model remains a China-centered approach rather than one spreading into American driveways.
