New York Public Service Comission approves meter socket adapter pilot

October 5, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 58

New York regulators have approved a two-year pilot program allowing wider use of meter socket adapters, devices that plug directly into a home's electric meter and let solar panels, battery storage, or EV chargers connect there instead of running through the home's main electrical panel. That matters because upgrading a main panel to handle these systems can be expensive, and the adapters are meant to let homeowners skip that cost.

Starting June 1, 2027, New Yorkers will be able to submit applications for solar, battery, or EV charger installations using an adapter from a utility-approved list. The pilot runs two years, after which utilities must report on how it went, including any safety or operational issues. The effort was pushed by adapter makers ConnectDER, Tesla, and Enphase Energy, along with solar companies and advocacy groups including Sunrun, NYSEIA, and ACE NY.

New York isn't alone in moving this direction. Delaware made similar rules permanent this past spring for its utility, Delmarva Power. Colorado's governor signed a law in May 2026 directing regulators there to set up a standard process for these adapters by the end of the year. And Enphase says its own adapter model has now been approved by 80 utilities across the US and Canada.

If you're considering solar, a battery system, or a home EV charger, it's worth asking an installer or your utility whether a meter socket adapter could apply to your home once New York's program takes effect, since it could lower the cost of the project by avoiding a panel upgrade.
