New Kempower charging deal powers up Canadian port operations
This is port and fleet news, not something that changes your home upgrade plans, but it's a useful sign of where electric vehicle charging technology is heading. Kempower, a Finnish charging company, has signed a deal to install fast-charging equipment at all of DP World's shipping terminals in Canada. The first two sites, run by Global Container Terminals in Vancouver, are already online.
The technology involves what's called opportunity charging, where heavy equipment like terminal tractors top up during shift changes and breaks instead of needing long dedicated charging sessions. In a multi-day trial, a battery-electric terminal tractor using this approach ran with near-total uptime, according to the port operator.
None of this involves home electrical work, rebates, or equipment you'd install at your house. But it reflects a broader trend of fast-charging systems getting cheaper and more reliable as companies deploy them at scale for trucks, tractors, and other heavy equipment. As that happens, similar charging hardware and know-how tend to filter down into products for homes and smaller businesses over time, including faster, smarter chargers for electric vehicles you might park in your own driveway.
