New EV Charging Checklist: Style, Comfort, And A Cool Place To Hang

October 1, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 32

Public charging for electric vehicles is getting a makeover, which matters if you're weighing an EV purchase but don't have reliable charging at home. IONNA, a charging network backed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, has built out its "Rechargery" stations, which pair fast chargers with sheltered waiting areas, Wi-Fi, snacks, and restrooms rather than the bare-bones setups common at older charging spots. As of March, the network had nearly 1,000 charging bays running at more than 100 sites, with thousands more under contract, including a new partnership putting chargers at over 350 Circle K convenience stores. The network also ranked first in J.D. Power's 2026 public charging satisfaction study.

Tesla's Supercharger network keeps expanding too, aided by a new foldable charging station design that's cheaper and faster to install. Meanwhile, EVgo has introduced stations that can deliver up to 750 kilowatts of power and let drivers plug into any available port, since the system automatically adjusts charging speed to match the vehicle, rather than requiring you to find a specific power level.

For homeowners, the takeaway is less about your own property and more about convenience away from it: if you live somewhere without easy home charging, or want backup options on road trips, more reliable, comfortable public charging stations are showing up nationwide, including new approaches like lamppost-mounted chargers and curbside stations aimed at dense city neighborhoods.
