New 6 passenger, 780-mile PHEV from GM has North America written all over it

July 19, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 23

This is a car story, not a home energy upgrade story, so there is not much here for a homeowner planning insulation, heating, or rebate decisions. Still, here is what happened: GM's China joint venture, SAIC-GM Wuling, unveiled a new SUV called the Starlight L, a plug-in hybrid (a car with both a gas engine and a battery you can charge, letting it run on electricity alone for shorter trips before switching to gas). It seats six, has a large 37.9 kWh battery, and can reportedly travel about 160 miles on electricity alone before the gas engine kicks in. In China it sells for roughly $19,900.

The bigger question raised is whether GM might bring a version of this vehicle to North America, possibly under a different badge like Buick. Canada has already started allowing limited imports of Chinese-built electric vehicles under a trade deal, and some see that as an opening for a car like this one. Nothing has been confirmed for the US or Canadian market, and no price, timeline, or availability has been set for either country.

For a homeowner focused on energy upgrades at home, this is mostly a curiosity about the auto industry rather than something that changes any rebate, incentive, or charging decision right now. If you already have a home EV charger or are considering plug-in hybrid ownership, this signals that automakers keep expanding options in that space, but there is nothing actionable here yet.
