New, 50-ton Volvo EC500 Electric excavator never needs charging

September 11, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 13

Volvo is testing a new electric excavator, the EC500, a 50-ton machine aimed at heavy jobs like quarrying, road building, and tunneling. It runs on an on-board battery good for two to three hours of continuous work, but it also connects to grid power through a 35-meter cable, so it can keep running shift after shift without stopping to recharge. The first pre-production unit is already working real job sites in Norway, and Volvo plans to launch the production version in spring 2027.

This is heavy construction equipment, not something homeowners buy or rent for household projects. It has no direct bearing on home energy upgrades, rebates, or equipment you'd use around the house.

The news is really about the construction industry's shift toward electric machinery and how companies are solving the charging problem for equipment that needs to run constantly. Worth knowing as background on where electrification is heading, but not something that changes any decisions about your own home.
