My Trip To Brazil To See The Rapid Rise Of Chinese Cars, Part 2: Dealer Visits
This is a car market story out of Brazil, not a home energy story, so there is nothing here about rebates or upgrades for your house. Still, it is a window into where electric and hybrid vehicle technology is heading globally.
Chinese automakers are moving fast in Brazil. Leapmotor's C10 and B10 models, sold through Stellantis, now lead large electric SUV sales, with one version offering up to 900 km of range through a range-extended design that uses a small engine just to charge the battery, not to drive the wheels. BYD has become a top-four brand, with its Dolphin Mini hatch cracking the national top three and its King plug-in hybrid now outselling the Toyota Corolla. BYD is building a large factory in Camaçari, Bahia, aiming to eventually produce 600,000 vehicles a year there. Great Wall Motors and Geely are also setting up Brazilian factories, with Geely taking a stake in Renault's local operations and starting production of its EX5 plug-in and EX2 electric hatch.
For a homeowner here, the direct takeaway is limited: none of these cars or companies are tied to U.S. rebate programs. But the trend is worth noting if you are weighing an electric vehicle alongside home upgrades like a heat pump or EV charger, since it shows battery and plug-in hybrid technology improving quickly and prices dropping in markets where these automakers compete hard.
