Minnesota solar project set to replace retiring coal plant reaches 710 MW

July 21, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 24

Xcel Energy has finished the third phase of its Sherco Solar project in Becker, Minnesota, built on the site of a coal plant that is retiring. With three phases now running, the project generates 710 megawatts of power.

A proposed fourth phase would push total capacity to 910 megawatts by 2029, enough to power more than 190,000 homes. Xcel says the expansion would also create about 300 union construction jobs and $90 million in local economic benefits.

This is a utility-scale project, not something that changes rebates or programs available to individual homeowners. But it does reflect a broader shift happening in Minnesota and other states, where aging coal plants are being replaced with solar and other renewable sources to supply the regional power grid. Over time, that kind of shift can affect the mix of electricity reaching your home and how utilities price and manage power, though this project itself does not come with any direct action or benefit for homeowners to sign up for. If you are curious about how your own state's energy mix is changing, or whether similar projects are planned near you, it may be worth checking with your local utility or state energy office for specifics.
