Lucid’s $50,000 Cosmos spotted testing in California after 2027 delay

October 5, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This isn't about home energy upgrades, but here's the short version since it touches on EVs: Lucid's upcoming Cosmos, a midsize electric SUV priced under $50,000, was spotted testing in camouflage on Highway 101 in Morgan Hill, California. Photos posted online show flush door handles, a sharply sloped roofline, and taillight strips matching a design Lucid registered in Europe earlier this year.

The sighting comes two months after Lucid delayed the Cosmos launch to the second half of 2027, pushing back an original late-2026 production target. Lucid says the SUV will have a 69 kWh battery, about 300 miles of range, and can add 200 miles of range in 14 minutes of fast charging. It uses a new, simplified drive unit the company says has fewer parts and costs less to build than its current one.

The delay comes as Lucid works through financial strain, including two rounds of layoffs this year and a stock drop tied to a bankruptcy report the company denied. Lucid says its cash should last well into 2027, meaning the Cosmos is arriving around the same time its current funding runs low. Rivian's competing R2 SUV, starting around $45,000, is aimed at the same late-2027 window, so Lucid will be racing a direct rival to market.

For homeowners, this is simply industry news about a future EV option — it doesn't affect any current rebates, charging incentives, or home upgrade programs.
