Lower Saxony’s Hydrogen Trains Are Now A Battery Exit Strategy Problem

This is a story about public transit in Germany, not home energy upgrades, but it points to a broader pattern worth noting: hydrogen is running into real-world trouble as a clean-energy solution outside of a few niche uses.

The German state of Lower Saxony has been running hydrogen-powered trains since 2022, backed by over €81 million in state funding plus federal money, and a dedicated €10 million hydrogen refueling station. By last summer, only 4 of the 14 trains were running because replacement fuel-cell parts hadn't arrived, leaving the refueling station operating at roughly a third of what it was built to handle. Meanwhile, the state's first battery-powered trains are expected around 2029, the same window when the hydrogen station would need a costly overhaul to keep going. That timing forces a choice: sink more money into fixing the hydrogen system, or switch to batteries. There are also questions about how "clean" the hydrogen fuel really is, since it comes from a chemical plant as a byproduct of industrial processes, and diverting it to trains may just push another fuel to fill the gap it leaves behind at the plant.

For homeowners, this doesn't change any rebate or program. It's a useful data point, though: it shows battery technology increasingly winning out over hydrogen even in transportation applications that once seemed like hydrogen's strongest use case.
