This news is about heavy trucking, not home upgrades, but it's worth knowing where battery technology is headed. An Australian company called Janus Electric is converting old diesel semi trucks to electric power once their engines wear out, rather than building new electric trucks from scratch. Janus says this conversion costs about a quarter of what a new electric truck costs. The trucks use a battery swap system instead of plug-in charging: a truck pulls in, a forklift swaps out the depleted battery pack for a charged one, and the truck is back on the road in about four minutes. Janus doesn't own the trucks' batteries outright — it rents them out as a service, so fleet owners pay less upfront and always get a battery that's been checked and maintained.
The swap approach also uses smaller, lighter battery packs than trucks built for long single trips, because the truck doesn't need enough range for an entire journey on one charge. That keeps the trucks lighter and lets them carry more cargo. It also means charging can happen slowly, using standard power rather than expensive fast-charging equipment.
None of this changes anything for your house directly. But it's a sign that battery swapping and slow, low-cost charging are becoming a real alternative to building out expensive fast-charging infrastructure — a trend that could eventually show up in other parts of the energy world, including how batteries and grid equipment are priced and managed at the residential level.
