Isuzu to Use Swappable Battery Tech for Yokohama’s Garbage Collection Route
Isuzu is testing a battery-swapping system for electric garbage trucks in Yokohama, Japan, where a depleted battery pack can be pulled out and replaced with a charged one in about three minutes. The idea is to avoid the long charging stops that electric trucks normally need, since garbage collection runs on a tight single daytime shift with no time for a vehicle to sit plugged in for an hour or two. The trial with the City of Yokohama runs through March 2028 and will test whether the swap system can keep trucks running their full routes, including powering the hydraulic compactors that make these vehicles especially power-hungry.
This isn't a home energy story, but it points to where battery technology is heading for vehicles that can't afford downtime. Swappable batteries let trucks use smaller, lighter packs instead of the oversized batteries needed for all-day range, which can lower cost and weight. Isuzu already tested similar swap technology on delivery trucks in Yokohama last year, and other manufacturers, including Mitsubishi Fuso, are running comparable programs with delivery fleets in Kyoto and Tokyo.
None of this changes anything about home electric vehicle charging or rooftop solar setups right now. But the same battery-swap concept, if it works well, could eventually show up in other specialized vehicles like street sweepers or utility trucks. It's an early-stage commercial fleet experiment worth watching rather than something that affects home upgrades today.
