Is The US Going To End DEAD LAST In Vehicle Electrification?

September 30, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 28

The US is falling further behind the rest of the world on electric vehicles. In the first half of 2026, fully electric cars (BEVs) made up just 5.9% of US sales. Compare that to China, at 45% BEV share in August, Europe at 26% in July, and Uruguay, where electric share has reached 50%. Brazil is catching up fast too, driven largely by the rise of Chinese-made EVs.

The gap comes down to policy and market choices. The US has largely blocked Chinese-made EVs, which are increasingly the cheapest and most capable option in many countries, while also seeing automakers pull back on their own EV plans and cancel projects. Even Canada, long tied to the US auto market, is now opening up to Chinese EV imports, and countries across Africa and elsewhere are moving to cut oil dependence with electric vehicles. The result is that the US, once a leader thanks to early efforts like the GM EV1, the Chevy Volt and Bolt, Tesla, and California's push for electrification, risks ending up last in the world on EV adoption.

For homeowners, this isn't a rebate or upgrade story. It's a sign that the EV options available in US showrooms are likely to stay more limited and pricier than what's sold elsewhere, since the most competitive electric models from Chinese automakers aren't reaching the American market. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home upgrades like a charger or solar, it may be worth watching whether any of this changes before you commit.
