IONNA just beat every major EV fast-charging network

August 13, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 30

A new report on public EV charging quality has some good news for drivers who rely on fast chargers away from home. IONNA, a charging network backed by BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, scored highest among major networks in JD Power's 2026 EV charging satisfaction survey, beating out the Mercedes-Benz Charging Network and the Rivian Adventure Network. IONNA has been running public chargers for under two years and now has 1,375 charging ports at 150 stations, often paired with amenities like restrooms, food, and lounges.

More broadly, public fast-charging satisfaction improved this year, with gains in availability, safety, and cost. Failed charging attempts also dropped to the lowest level since the study began in 2021, though about 1 in 8 visits still doesn't result in a successful charge. That's an improvement, but it means public fast charging still isn't as reliable as filling up at a gas station.

Not every type of charging got better, though. Satisfaction with public Level 2 chargers (the slower kind often found at workplaces or public parking) actually fell, mainly due to payment problems and trouble starting a charging session. The study also found that location matters: chargers at hotels, gas stations, and restaurants scored better than those at dealerships or in stand-alone parking lots and garages, suggesting that a comfortable place to wait matters almost as much as the charger itself for anyone driving an EV.
