Hyundai’s off-road electric SUV makes its virtual debut, but will it ever hit the road?

October 7, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 4

This news is about a car, not a home upgrade, so it has no direct bearing on energy-efficiency plans for your house. Still, here's what happened: Hyundai's electric off-road SUV concept, called Crater, showed up in a video game rather than in dealer showrooms. The vehicle can be customized and driven virtually in The Crew Motorfest, an open-world racing game, marking the first time a Korean automaker has appeared in it.

The Crater remains a concept vehicle, meaning Hyundai has not committed to building and selling it. It previews design ideas for future versions of Hyundai's XRT off-road trim line, which already includes models like the IONIQ 5 XRT and Tucson XRT Pro. Hyundai says the game appearance is part of a broader push to reach car buyers through gaming rather than traditional advertising.

Separately, Hyundai does have a real electric pickup truck planned for 2030, based on another concept called the Boulder. That will be the company's first body-on-frame vehicle sold in the US, a sturdier truck-style construction. For homeowners, none of this affects rebates, heat pumps, or weatherization programs. It is simply a preview of where an automaker's design and marketing efforts are headed, with any actual purchase decision years away.
