Hyundai Shows Neira Electric MPV Prototype in Indonesia Motor Show
Hyundai showed off a new electric family vehicle, the Neira, at a motor show in Indonesia. It's a three-row electric minivan-crossover built for large households, with seating for six or seven depending on the configuration. Hyundai plans to build it at a factory in Cikarang, Indonesia, with production starting before the end of 2026. It shares its underlying mechanical platform with the Kia Carens Clavis EV, a similar electric van already sold in India, though Hyundai gave it its own styling.
While full specs haven't been released, the Neira is expected to closely match its Kia sibling: a single electric motor making up to 171 horsepower, with a choice of two battery sizes. The smaller 42-kWh battery is expected to give roughly 250 miles of range, and a larger 51.4-kWh battery around 304 miles. Both are expected to charge from 10% to 80% in about 39 minutes using a fast charger. The vehicle is also expected to support vehicle-to-load capability, meaning it could power outside devices or equipment from its battery.
This vehicle is aimed at Southeast Asian and possibly Indian markets, where large family vans are a popular vehicle type. Hyundai has said there are no plans to bring it to North America or Europe, where buyers tend to favor larger SUVs. For US and European homeowners, this means the Neira itself won't be an option, though it reflects the wider push by automakers to build affordable, family-sized electric vehicles for markets where they're in high demand.
