New data comparing German and Indian passenger rail fleets found that battery-electric trains are running in actual passenger service more reliably than hydrogen trains. Looking at the second quarter of 2026, seven battery fleets averaged 85.9% of their trains actually in use, compared to 70.8% for three hydrogen fleets. Germany's hydrogen fleets have struggled with fuel-cell parts shortages and supply problems, forcing operators to fall back on diesel trains to keep service running. Battery fleets had rough launches too, but recovered and scaled up: Germany now has around 124 battery trains running with 140 more on order, versus roughly 49 hydrogen trains total, concentrated in just three struggling deployments.
The core issue is that battery trains fit more simply into existing electric rail systems, charging from overhead wires and running on stored power where there are no wires. Hydrogen trains need a whole separate system for making, storing, and delivering hydrogen fuel, which adds cost and points of failure. India's new hydrogen train made headlines for its power, but the article notes the real test is whether it keeps running reliably for years, not whether it sets a record.
