How to bring a geothermal well back from the dead

A geothermal company called Zanskar has revived a power plant well in New Mexico that had been steadily losing heat for years. Geothermal energy works by pumping naturally hot water from underground to spin turbines and generate electricity. At the Lightning Dock site, the original wells, less than 2,500 feet deep, had cooled from about 300°F to 250°F by 2024, well below what the plant's 15-megawatt facility needed to run properly. Zanskar bought the site that year and drilled a new well roughly 8,000 feet deep, tapping hotter water further underground.

After a full year of operation, the company says the new well is now one of the most productive of its kind in the country, producing more heat than the plant needs at times. Zanskar credits the turnaround to artificial intelligence models that helped identify where to drill, plus drilling techniques borrowed from the oil and gas industry that let it dig deeper wells 35 percent faster. Outside experts say the results hold up and mark a genuinely strong well, even if the underlying techniques aren't revolutionary.

This is not something that affects home energy upgrades directly, since it involves a utility-scale power plant rather than home heating systems. But it is a sign of renewed momentum in geothermal energy generally, with venture capital funding for geothermal startups reaching its highest level since 2022. Homes with geothermal heat pumps draw on similar underground heat, though at a much smaller scale, and continued investment in the technology could support more of that development over time.
