How Attribution Science Uses Models to Uncover Climate Change’s Effects on Weather
Scientists can now say with growing confidence how much climate change contributed to a specific heat wave, storm, or flood. This work, called attribution science, compares the climate we actually have with a modeled version of the world without human-caused warming. Researchers run computer climate models both ways and see how much more likely, intense, or damaging an event became because of emissions. A well-known example: the 2021 Pacific Northwest heat wave would have been almost impossible without human-caused warming, and was about 1°C hotter because of it.
The climate models behind this work simulate the atmosphere, oceans, land, and ice using established physics, and they've been refined over decades. Notably, some climate models built more than 50 years ago correctly predicted the warming we're experiencing now, which gives scientists confidence that the models capture real physical processes, not just guesswork. Scientists also run models many times with tiny variations, and compare results across many different models, to separate natural weather variability from the signal of human-caused warming, and to check that findings hold up across different scientific approaches.
None of this changes what any homeowner needs to do about their own house. But it matters as background: when reports link a specific flood, heat wave, or storm to climate change, and note that such events are becoming more frequent or severe, that connection rests on this kind of modeling work, not speculation. It's part of why extreme weather risks are being described with more precision than in the past, which can feed into how insurers, planners, and rebate programs think about future risk.
