Hillphoenix CO₂ Unit Offers Flexible Refrigeration Options
Hillphoenix, a refrigeration maker under Dover Corp, has released a new compact cooling unit called the Advansor FlexOne. It uses CO₂ as a refrigerant instead of the synthetic chemicals found in many commercial cooling systems. CO₂ has a global warming potential of 1 and does not deplete the ozone layer, so it sidesteps the regulatory and cost concerns tied to phasing out older refrigerants.
This is commercial equipment, built for walk-in coolers and freezers in small and medium grocery stores, convenience stores, pharmacies, and similar businesses, not for home use. It is designed to fit tight spaces, including rooftops, and includes a variable-speed compressor that adjusts cooling to actual demand, along with features meant to make service and repairs easier. The company says it can hold steady performance even when outdoor temperatures top 100 degrees. It comes in two power configurations and carries a 24-month parts warranty.
For a homeowner, this news does not translate into a product or rebate for your house. It is relevant mainly as a sign of where refrigeration technology is heading: natural refrigerants like CO₂, which carry little climate impact, are becoming more common in commercial systems as businesses prepare for stricter rules on older refrigerants. Similar shifts toward low-impact refrigerants are also happening in home air conditioners and heat pumps, so this kind of change in the commercial market is part of a broader trend worth knowing about, even if this particular unit stays in stores and warehouses.
