During this month's heat wave, offshore wind farms near New England helped keep the region's grid running without leaning as hard on old, expensive oil-burning power plants. Two projects, Vineyard Wind off Massachusetts and Revolution Wind near Rhode Island, fed hundreds of megawatts into the grid as people cranked their air conditioners. On July 2, the hottest day of the heat wave, oil supplied about 10 percent of the region's power at peak demand, down from nearly 15 percent during a similar hot stretch in June 2025. Over the four-day heat wave, oil-fired power generation dropped 37 percent compared to the same period last year. Rooftop solar and a new hydropower line carrying electricity from Canada to Maine also eased demand and reduced oil use.
None of this requires homeowners to do anything, but it points to something useful: more wind and solar on the grid, plus rooftop solar on houses, can mean less reliance on the dirtiest, priciest power sources during extreme weather, which affects everyone's electric bills. Offshore wind is usually discussed for its winter reliability benefits, since ocean winds are strongest then, but this heat wave showed it also helps on the worst summer days.
The Trump administration has repeatedly tried to block these wind projects, including a stop-work order on Revolution Wind and a broader pause on five offshore projects last year, both later overturned in court. The administration has since shifted to paying developers to cancel future wind farms, meaning few if any new offshore projects are likely to get built in the U.S. anytime soon.
