Google is backing Planted Solar’s plan for clean data center power

September 15, 2026 · Latitude Media · Score: 22

Google is investing in Planted Solar, a company that builds solar projects using robots and software instead of traditional construction methods. Planted just raised $31.8 million, with backers including Google, Khosla Ventures, Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and others. The company's approach uses a digital "twin" of a project site to plan exact component placement, then deploys custom machines to install simple, standardized parts like commodity tubing and brackets. Because the process skips grading the land, permitting and construction move faster than with conventional solar farms.

This isn't really about home solar, but it's part of a bigger trend worth knowing about. Tech companies like Google are racing to power massive data centers for AI, and speed matters more than ever. Solar and batteries can be built much faster than gas plants or nuclear, which is why hyperscalers are turning to companies like Planted even as they also invest in gas. Clean energy projects are also being used to ease local opposition to data centers — in Tennessee, Elon Musk's xAI added solar and batteries near a data center after facing backlash over unpermitted gas turbines, and Oracle and OpenAI are funding solar to offset emissions from a project in New Mexico.

Planted plans to scale up fast, aiming to build ten times more solar capacity in 2027 than it did this year, using a new generation of fully autonomous machines. None of this changes anything about rebates or upgrades for your own house, but it shows how solar technology and speed of construction are becoming central to the country's energy buildout.
