Google buys power from record-busting solar-battery site in Arkansas
Google has agreed to buy power from a massive new solar and battery project in Mississippi County, Arkansas, called the Steel River Energy Center. Developer Cypress Creek Energy broke ground on the site, which will eventually produce 2.45 gigawatts of solar power and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage, making it one of the largest solar-plus-storage plants in the country. Google is buying the output of the first two phases, which will total 1.6 gigawatts of solar and 1.9 gigawatt-hours of storage once complete in 2029. The power will flow into the regional grid run by Entergy Arkansas rather than directly to Google, helping supply the utility's system, including data centers in the state.
For homeowners, this isn't a program you can sign up for, but it reflects broader trends worth knowing about. Solar paired with batteries is now often the cheapest and fastest new electricity source to build, which can affect what shows up on your utility bill over time as more of it comes online. The project also relies heavily on U.S.-made materials, including steel, solar panels, and batteries, part of a wider push to build more clean-energy equipment domestically.
The project is also notable because it's moving forward despite recent federal policy changes, including new tariffs and the loss of a major solar tax credit, that have made things harder for solar developers generally. Arkansas offers no special state incentives for renewable energy, so this project had to compete on cost alone, a sign of how affordable solar and storage have become even without extra government support.
