GM is flooding dealers with Bolt EVs – is that part of the plan?

July 4, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 35

Chevy is building up a big stockpile of its 2027 Bolt EV, a low-priced electric hatchback that GM has said will only be made for one model year. Dealers currently have about 118 days' worth of Bolts sitting on their lots, well above the 60 days considered normal for the industry, even though sales have been climbing (3,433 sold in the second quarter of 2026, up from 791 in the first quarter).

Normally a pile of unsold inventory like this would upset dealers, since they typically borrow money to stock cars and start paying interest the longer those cars sit unsold. But Chevy dealers haven't been complaining, unlike dealers dealing with other manufacturers' EV pushes. The likely explanation is that GM is deliberately loading up dealer lots with Bolts now, before shutting down Bolt production for good, so dealers have EV inventory to sell while GM shifts its factories to a newer generation of electric vehicles. GM may also be sweetening the deal for dealers through incentive programs tied to its financing arm.

For a homeowner shopping for an EV, this mainly means the Bolt is likely to stay available and possibly discounted for a while yet, since dealers have plenty on hand and reportedly modest incentives compared to other Chevy EVs. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home charging or solar plans, it's worth knowing this surplus suggests you may have room to negotiate rather than facing a supply crunch.
