Gibraltar sells Terrasmart racking business to Unirac for $5 million
Gibraltar Industries is getting out of the solar business. The company sold Terrasmart, its solar racking and foundation division, to competitor Unirac for $5 million. Terrasmart makes the hardware that holds ground-mounted solar panels in place, including specialized ground screws for difficult soil, fixed racks, and single-axis trackers that tilt panels to follow the sun.
This is the second piece of Terrasmart that Gibraltar has sold off this year. Back in February, it sold Terrasmart's electrical equipment business, known as eBOS (electrical balance of systems), which includes combiner boxes and wiring products, to another solar tracker maker, GameChange Energy, for $70 million. Gibraltar's CEO described the two sales as a planned two-step exit meant to hand these product lines to companies focused on solar equipment.
For most homeowners, this is a behind-the-scenes shift in who owns which solar manufacturing brands, rather than something that changes rebates, pricing, or panel availability directly. It mainly matters to people involved in larger ground-mounted solar projects, such as community solar arrays, rather than typical rooftop solar installations on houses. If you're considering rooftop solar, this consolidation among racking and hardware suppliers isn't likely to affect your project directly, though it's a sign of ongoing changes in who makes the equipment behind the scenes in the solar industry.
