Genesis may bring a more affordable luxury EV to the mass market

July 20, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 12

This is car industry news, not a home energy story, but here's the gist for anyone weighing an EV purchase down the road. Genesis, Hyundai's luxury brand, is considering a smaller, more affordable electric vehicle aimed at the mass market rather than just high-end buyers. An executive told a reporter the idea is still being "evaluated" and nothing is confirmed. If it happens, the car would likely be based on the new Hyundai IONIQ 3, a compact electric hatchback, and could take design cues from a Genesis concept car called the Mint shown back in 2019.

For context, the IONIQ 3 that this car would share parts with comes with two battery sizes in Europe, offering a driving range of up to about 213 miles or up to about 308 miles depending on the battery. It uses a simpler 400-volt electrical system rather than the faster-charging 800-volt setup found in some other Hyundai EVs, which helps keep costs down. In the UK, the base IONIQ 3 starts around $29,800.

Genesis isn't rushing this. The company says its growth is "a marathon, not a sprint" and wants any new segment to offer lasting demand, not just a short-term sales bump. Other luxury brands, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, are also working on cheaper EVs. None of this changes anything about home charging or energy upgrades right now, but it's a sign that more affordable electric vehicle options may be headed to showrooms in the next few years.
